OBJECTIVE

Bob, the Gopher Tortoise is on a mission to get children outside! The virtual world of video games is creating a detachment from reality. Children need to use their five senses to learn about nature and understand our connection in the web of life. Nature is the best playground and April 10 is Florida Gopher Tortoise Day, so let’s help Bob get children outside to play and discover nature. Included on this site are instruction materials ideas and event activities ideas.

Festival Activities

Introduction:

  • Poster with Gopher Tortoise pictures and facts
  • Read “The Coastal Dune Drama,” a story about a Florida Gopher Tortoise, Bob, who finds his way back home with the help of friends
  • Optional: Read “Bob and Trey’s Excellent Adventure,” a story about a Florida Gopher Tortoise (Bob), who is displaced due to construction and development on his habitat (home, sweet home), but manages to adapt with the help of friends and humans.

Outdoor Activities: (these activities can be held indoors, during inclement weather)

  • BATTLE FOR THE BURROW: (Bean Bag Toss; Prize of Prickly Pear Cactus Taffy
  • ARE YOU TURTLE ENOUGH FOR THE TURTLE CLUB?: (Test Your Turtle Making Skills craft. Materials: small paper bowls & plates, crayons, spoons, googly eyes, glue, scissors, tape, staplers)
  • AIM FOR SUCCESS: (Tail Gate Golf, Prize of Prickly Pear Cactus Licorice or cactus cookie cutter cookies)
  • RACE FOR A RESPITE: (Obstacle Course – who can get to the burrow fastest? Prize of Prickly Pear Cactus Juice)
